How to Play Slots

There was a time when everyone, from players to casinos, looked down their collective noses at slots players. And, to some extent, the pre-modern slot machines earned their reputation as "one-armed bandits". Payment percentages have risen dramatically, so now players bet form a pool from which as much as 98% of wagers will be returned to players. It's certainly true that much of this money goes to the lucky jackpot winners. But you can play slots for as little as a nickel (five cents) and if you can avoid some pitfalls you can spend some pleasant time at the slots. The invention of the Random Number Generator made slots more attractive by reducing, if not eliminating, the feeling that the machines were rigged.

There are banks of slot machines in every casino. Online, the better slots sites have hundreds of games. Some software developers for the eGaming industry specialize in slots and their output is visually nothing short of stunning.

Sequence of Play

  • The first thing a slots player must decide is how much to bet. Games are available for as little as one cent. The jackpots are commensurately lower, but if a player is playing as much for fun as for the chance to win big, then the low end bet may be the best choice.

  • Next, the player must decide how many paylines to play. Video slots offer up to fifty paylines. Usually you bet the same number of credits for each payline you choose; but some machines offer the option to vary the bet per payline.

  • Online you click on the spin button. Most slots in land-based casinos have play or spin buttons but there are still many pull-handle slot machines.

  • The machine will tell you if you have won and how much. Online your winnings will show up as credits. In land-based casinos, the screen may also show your winnings as credits. When you decide to cash out, the machine will print a ticket with your credits.

Betting Rules

There aren't any betting rules per se in slots but there are some courtesies players extend to each other and some betting pitfalls to avoid.

  • Many players like to play more than one machine, but if you see that people are waiting for a machine it is considered good manners to give up your extra machine(s).

  • When players go to the restroom they often leave a chair tilted against their machine. They may also leave their jacket on the chair. These are clear indications that the player is coming back soon. Do not take that machine!

  • Conversely, if you are going to the restaurant for a long lunch, don't try to save your machine.

Some of the pitfalls of slots are similar to the pitfalls of gambling in general. For example, don't bet money you can't afford to lose. If you can see gaming as a form of entertainment, you will be less likely to lose more than you can afford to lose. However, there are some strategies and pitfalls unique to slots.

  • Understand the game you are playing. Many games, such as buy-a-pay slots have variable jackpots and payouts. It often is the case that to have the best chance to win you have to play the maximum at the machine. If the maximum is too much, go to a machine with a lower maximum.

  • Never play less than the maximum on progressive machines.

  • Many players think that the odds of hitting a jackpot change with each pull. If that was ever the case, it no longer is. The Random Number Generator guarantees that the odds are the same for every pull.

Summary

If you want pure gambling entertainment with the chance of making a killing for a very small investment, then slots are your game. There are so many options for players!
