How to Play Rummy

The name rummy refers to a group of skill-based card games that require players to form melds. A meld consists of three or more cards that follow the rules of that specific game. Each game has its own unique type of meld.

Most melds are either three or more cards of the same rank called sets or three or more cards that are both suited and consecutive called runs. If you are already familiar with the most common rummy games you may be surprised to find out that there are at least twenty variations of rummy.

The object in rummy is to discard your last card. Each game has its own rules that determine how you can do that.

Rummy is a game that you can play with your family. Games of rummy usually take some time so, if you want to play for fun or for low stakes, it’s a perfect, fun way to entertain the whole family.

Usually players cut the deck to determine the first dealer. Thereafter the deal moves to the left.

In many rummy games the number of cards dealt depends on the number of players. When there are two players each gets 10 cards; with three or four players each gets 7 cards; with five or six players each gets 6 cards.

General Play

  • Rummy is played with a standard 52-card deck. After the cards are dealt the dealer puts the undealt cards in a stack and turns one card over. This becomes the "discard pile". Players can either take the top card from the discard pile or take the top card from the deck.

  • If the player is able to meld or add to a meld s/he may do so, but in all cases the player must discard onto the discard pile.

  • Players are given point penalties for the cards remaining in their hand when another player discards their last card.

  • Gin Rummy is the most famous of all the rummy games. There are three ways the game can end. First, one player can successfully discard their last card. Secondly, a player can "knock". If a player has made at least one meld, and has used at least half their cards, and has a remaining card count less than ten, s/he can "knock". The knocker wins if their remaining card count is the lowest of all players. In that case, the others are penalized their card count. However, if a player knocks, the others can add to the knocker's melds. If in doing so, one opponent has the lowest card count, then the knocker loses and receives a 25 point penalty.

  • Rummy is usually played without jokers but there are variations that allow jokers and wild cards.

  • Normally, players can only pick up the top card of the discard pile in lieu of taking one card from the stack. In rummy 500 the cards are laid out so that players can see all discarded cards and can choose to take as many discarded cards as they want in accordance with the rules.

  • Rummy is usually played with cards but rummikub and mahjong are usually played with tiles.

Summary

Although there are many variations to rummy, the rules are quite easy to learn. Competitive players will count cards and calculate the odds of a play. But because rummy is a relatively slow-moving game, many people play just for fun or low stakes.

Each variation has developed its own terminology. Part of the fun of having so many types of rummy is learning to use the different terms characteristic to each.

Rummy has been a popular parlor game for a couple of hundred years. Now, with sophisticated software, it is available online for your convenience. Many players, who never play the traditional casino games online, enjoy playing rummy online.
