Types of Poker Tournaments

There are many different types of poker tournaments. The variety is limited only by the imagination of the casino. While poker tournaments are for poker players, every casino game generates its own tournaments for the players who most like those games.

Many poker tournaments have a buy-in, but some, like freeroll tournaments don't. The dollar value of a player's chips are a kind of fiction. The winner is usually the one who garners all the chips in the entire tournament. At many tournaments, every player who makes it to the last table wins money.

A tournament can involve as few as two players up to thousands. When you peruse online casinos, you will find tournaments scheduled to start around the clock.

Buy-ins

Most tournaments require entrants to buy chips. The winner is the player with all the chips at the end. Some tournaments charge spectators to watch. Some of those proceeds are added to the potential winnings.

Freeroll tournaments don't charge a buy-in. They are generally for new players who need a competitive atmosphere to sharpen their skills but at no risk to their personal bankroll.

Most tournaments don't allow a second buy-in and players' own cash is not accepted at the table. Some tournaments do allow a second buy-in. These add-ons are strictly controlled by the rules of the tournament. Always know the rules of a tournament before entering.

Knockout

Most tournaments are called knockout tournaments. Players are moved around from table to table to insure that all tables have almost the same number of players. Entire tables are eliminated as the pool of players shrinks.

Shootout

Some tournaments are called shootout. Generally, this means that players stay at their table even as the number of players dwindles. The winner of table A will combine with the winners of other tables to form a new table in the next round.

Betting Variations

  • Limit betting (or structured betting) means that players are limited to a rigid betting structure. In the early rounds of betting, raises will be at a given level; in the later rounds the bets will increase to another given level

  • There are several types of betting all under the heading semi-structured betting:

    • In one type, players may not raise less than the previous raise.
    • In another, raises may not be greater than the size of the pot (pot limit).
    • In the third type, betting and raising is allowed within a range of permitted bets (spread limit).

  • In unstructured or no-limit betting, players can bet and raise as much as they want at any time in the game. A player can bet their entire bankroll. This is called going "all-in". In some tournaments, going all-in early is a strategic play designed to quickly increase one's chip stack.

Types of Tournaments

  • Almost every variant of poker has been played as a tournament.

  • The most popular tournaments are for Texas Hold'em and Omaha.

  • H.O.R.S.E. is a round-robin tournament in which players rotate the games in each round. The games are: Hold'em, Omaha, Razz, Seven-card stud, and Eight-high seven-card stud.

  • H.O.S.E. is like HORSE but without Razz.

  • Sit-and-go tournaments were created with our high-speed modern way-of-life in mind. These are tournaments that start when there are a certain minimum number of players. These are single-table tournaments. Each table begins when it fills up.

  • Some tournaments have a relatively high buy-in so, to enable more players to enter, they may allow players to play each other at a lower buy-in for the chance to accumulate enough money to be able to afford the larger buy-in. Since the preliminary tournament is a kind of spin-off of the main event, they are called satellite tournaments.

The Big and Famous Tournaments

  • World Poker Tour is a kind of travelling poker tournament in the U.S. It has counterparts in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, Australia, and the Caribbean. Tournaments are often sponsored by individual casinos.

  • The World Series of Poker is staged in Las Vegas. It has become so popular that it is now televised.

  • The National Heads-up Poker Championship involves a starting field of 64 players. They play one-on-one single elimination for up to 6 rounds.

  • These are the big tournaments. Every casino will sponsor its own, much smaller tournaments in every format imaginable.

Summary

Many players begin playing in small games and enter their first tournament with some trepidation. But it is in the casino's best interest to have tournaments that appeal to as wide a range as possible. Almost all players can find tournaments to their liking.
