Pai Gow Poker is a variation of an old Chinese dominoes game. The card game
version was created as another exotic alternative to standard poker.
Pai Gow is played with a 52-card deck plus one joker. The function of the joker varies both within the game and from casino to casino. So it is important at the outset to learn the house rules regarding the joker.
The object of Pai Gow is to form two hands out of the seven cards dealt. One hand must have five cards and it must have a higher value than the two-card hand. For example, you can't make your two-card hand a pair of aces if the five-card hand will then be King high.
In land-based casinos the role of banker/dealer may rotate around the table. The banker has an advantage so in this case every player gets his chance to be the banker. In other land-based casinos and online, the casino is the banker.
In land-based casinos, Pai Gow is played at tables arranged for seven players. The dealer deals out seven hands of seven cards even when there are empty seats at the table. The empty seats are dealt "Dragon Hands". The house will offer the players the chance to play the dragon hands.
The five-card hands are ranked as in standard poker with one important exception: a straight of ace, 2, 3, 4, 5 is ranked higher than king, queen, jack, ten, nine but lower than an ace-high straight. This is not a universal rule, so make sure you know the house rule before you start.
The joker is an ace unless it can complete a straight or flush. In the two-card hand, the joker is almost always an ace. Once again, make sure you know the house rules before you play. |
