Craps Glossary

Aces
A bet that the next roll of the dice will be 1 and 1.

Any Craps
A bet that the next roll will be either a 2, 3, or 12.

Any Seven
This bet says that the next roll of the dice will total seven.

Arm
A nickname for a player whose luck at throwing the dice exceeds the normal odds of the game.

Back Line
This is also known as the Don't Pass Line.

Back Wall
This is the far end of the table opposite the shooter. A roll must hit the back wall to be valid.

Barred
Although Pass Line bets lose automatically on Come Out rolls when 2, 3, or 12 are rolled, the 12 doesn't win automatically for Don't Pass Line bets. It is barred.

Betting Right
When bettors bet that the shooter will win by making Pass Line bets and Come bets.

Betting Wrong
When bettors bet that the shooter will not win by placing Don't Come or Don't Pass bets.

Big Eight
A bet that predicts that an 8 will come up before a 7 does.

Big Six
A bet that predicts that a 6 will come up before a 7 does.

Big Red
Betting on any seven. Big Red is a nickname for the number seven because it is considered bad luck to say seven after the Point has been set.

Bones
This is an international nickname for the dice.

Boxcars
As a bet it is predicting that the next throw will be six/six. The term is also used to indicate a throw of six/six.

Boxman
This is an employee of the casino who sits between the two dealers and has the responsibility to keep charge of the casino's chips. The term boxperson is becoming accepted.

Broke Money
When a player loses all his money at the casino, the casino will give him money so he can get home.

Buffalo
Betting on both Any Seven and Hard Way.

Buy Bet
The casino agrees to pay correct odds for a place bet in exchange for a guarantee from the player to return 5% of his winnings to the house.

C and E Bet
This is a one-roll bet whereby the player bets that the next roll will be either Craps (2, 3 or 12) or 11.

Capped Dice
Dice that have been altered to change the odds. Other terms for capped dice are "rigged" and "crooked".

Cold Table
A Craps table where bettors are losing their bets more than normal or where shooters are failing to make their point.

Come Bet
This bet is made after the Come Out roll. It is similar to the Pass Line bet.

Come Out Roll
This is the first throw of the dice in a round of Craps. The number rolled makes the points for the Pass Line and Don't Pass Line bets.

Craps
A roll of 2, 3, or 12.

Crap Out
To roll craps (2, 3, 12) on the first roll of the dice.

Dice
These are the key elements in Craps. They are made to a fine balance so that no number can come up more often than any other.

Don't Come
After the Come Out roll has set the Point, this bet predicts that a seven will be rolled before the Point is rolled.

Don't Pass Bet
This is a bet against the shooter made before the Come Out roll.

Don't Pass Bar
The strip on the table where players place Don't Pass bets.

Double Odds
Some casinos allow players to make Free Odds bets double their original bet. Free Odds are allowed on four types of bets: Pass Line, Don't Pass Line, Come and Don't Come bets.

Easy Way
Nicknames for rolls of the dice that total 4, 6, 8, or 10 without shooting doubles.

Edge
The advantage the house enjoys on any given bet.

Field Bet
A bet that predicts the next roll will be either 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12.

Free Odds Bet
This is a bet at real odds.

Front Line
Another name for the Pass Line.

Hard Way
A bet that 4, 6, 8 or 10 thrown as doubles will be rolled before a seven..

Hi-Lo
A bet that the next throw will be either 2 or 12.

Hope Bet
This is a one-throw bet wagered on a specific combination of numbers.

Hoping Hard Way
A one-throw bet on the combination 2-2.

Horn Bet
This is a four-way bet on the numbers 2, 3, 11, and 12. The player places the same bet on each of these numbers.

Horn High Bet
This is similar to the Horn Bet but here the player places two units on 12 and one on the other numbers.

Hot Table
A table where shooters are experiencing better than average luck and are making their Point in excess of the odds.

Insurance Bet
When bets are made that are intended to cover one another.

Lay Bet
A wager that the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 will not be thrown before a seven is thrown.

Lay Odds
A bet that the shooter won't make his point. This bet has a better payout but the house takes a 5% commission.

Line Bet
This is a bet on the Pass Line or the Don't Pass Line.

Little Joe
A dice combination of 2-2.

Marker Puck
This is a small, round plastic that the dealer uses to indicate if a game is ongoing or a new game is about to begin.

Midnight
This is a one-throw bet that the number 12 will come up.

Natural
This is a bet that the Come Out roll will be either a 7 or an 11.

Off
If a player calls his bet "off" it remains on the table but is not applied to the next roll of the dice.

Outside Numbers
These are the numbers 4, 5, 9, and 10.

Parlay
When the player combines bets as a way to enhance his chances and have more numbers in play on any given roll.

Pass Line Bet
This is a bet that the shooter will win the round.

Payoff
The money a bettor receives from the house for a winning bet.

Place Bet
This is a bet in which the bettor bets that a place number will come up before a seven does.

Place Numbers
These are the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.

Point
This is the number established by the Come Out roll. The Point can only be a Place Number. After the point is established, the shooter tries to roll it again before a seven, thereby winning that game.

Point Number
The numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. One of them is determined to be the Point by the Come Out roll.

Press a Bet
To double one's bet.

Proposition Bets
These are all the one-throw bets and the Hard Way bet.

Puck
This is a plastic disk. One side is black with white lettering reading "off" and the other side is white with black letters reading "on". When a shooter is coming out the puck is off to the side and reads "off". After the shooter establishes a point the puck is placed on the number corresponding to the point and it is turned over to read "on".

Rail
The area at the top of the table where the players keep their chips.

Right Bettor
This is a nickname for a player who bets that the shooter will make his point.

Seven Out
When a seven is thrown before the shooter makes his point. The shooter loses and the next player in line becomes the shooter.

Snake Eyes
The dice combination 1-1.

Stickman
A casino employee whose duties are to announce the result of each roll, to return the dice to the shooter, and to place and pay out all proposition bets. In some casinos stickperson is the preferred designation.

Toke
A tip from the player to the dealer.

Three-way Craps
This is a three-way bet on the numbers 2, 3, and 12. One unit is placed on each of these numbers.

Vigorish
The commission that the house takes.

Working
These are bets that are in play on the next throw of the dice.

Whirl Bet
When the bettor bets on the 2, 3, 7, 11, and 12 together with the same amount on each number.

Wrong Bettor
A bettor who bets that the shooter will not win the game.

Yo
This is the number 11.
