Craps Etiquette

Players may handle the dice with only one hand. Some casinos require a player to place the dice on the table first if he or she wants to change hands.
  • Most casinos require the dice to bounce off the Back Wall.
  • There are rules that determine a no-roll: If a die leaves the table; if a die lands in the cup where the other dice are kept; on the rail where players keep their chips; and in the Boxman's bank.
  • Some casinos, but not all, consider it a no-roll if a die hits anyone around the table. Some casinos allow it if it is clear to everyone that the person did not interfere with the throw.
  • Players and casino workers are not allowed to come in direct contact with each other. When a dealer wants to "hand" something such as chips or the dice to a player he will put them in front of the player, not hand them directly to the player.
  • Some casinos allow players to put the dice in any setting in their hand but all casinos are impatient if this takes too long and slows the game down.
  • If a die lands leaning it is still in play if it is obvious what number would show on the die if the object it is leaning on is removed.
  • The table workers don't like when players toss chips. Place the chips. If you can't reach the Stickman, give the chips to the dealer who will relay them to the stickman.
  • No one is obligated to be the shooter. The dice simply pass to the left.
  • Dealers appreciate tips. One way is simply to toss chips "for the dealers" or "for the boys" (this latter has survived despite the fact that there are no boys and many dealers are women). Players may make bets for the dealers, that is, winnings go to the dealers.
  • Players are notoriously superstitious so don't say "seven". Say Big Red or Red instead.
  • It is considered bad luck to change dice in the middle of a game.
  • Generally speaking, anything that brings the result of the game into question is discouraged. After some experience you will more fully understand how to protect the integrity of any throw.
  • Keep all food, drinks, smoking materials, and anything that can damage the table away from the table.

Summary

Because of the nature of this game and the fact that the players handle the dice, there are very strict codes of conduct practiced around a craps table.
